Probably the most common question every Reiki practitioner is asked is what exactly is Reiki?
There have been many wonderful explanations - blog posts and articles written on Reiki we even have some up on our Facebook page. But I thought I would write this post to those of you who have never had a session or really ever heard anything about it.
Let's first start with what the the word Reiki actually means. It's a combination of two Japanese words; Rei which means "higher power" and Ki meaning "life force energy".
This life force energy is in every living being from us humans to animals, plants and even water. It's what keeps us alive and when this energy becomes low or the flow of it stagnant, problems can arise.
Ok. Now I want you to think of yourself as a "Vacuum" that is constantly on. Everyday when you are going about your daily activities you are also sucking up all the things you come in contact with - good or bad - like the food we eat to other people's energy. You can even pick up the energy from the places you visit. When our "Vacuum" is in perfect working order we feel wonderful emotionally and physically things are going great. It's when we start picking up all the garbage or the pieces that really shouldn't be put through our "Vacuum" that it starts to clog our machine and make us feel not so wonderful. These things can be the negative energies or emotions of others from family, friends, co-workers to a guy at the store. If we focus our intake ports on these people we will bring that negativity into our system. The same goes for the places we visit - these spaces can act as "hubs of energy" that can collect from all the events & people who have interacted in that location. For example, if your workplace has a lot of negative people working there or a home as had a lot of drama, arguments or negative situations that energy can remain in that space.
Have you ever walked into a place and thought "Wow the energy in here is really intense"?
Well that is the residual energy you are feeling. But it can also go the other way, containing positive loving energy as well, it all depends on which has been more dominant in that area. The food we eat also has a huge effect on our system. The more processed and refined the food is, the lower the energy it contains. For example: fast food = low energy, fruits & vegetables = high energy.
When we begin to take all of these lower things into our system it causes blockages and we begin to lose suction thus lowering our life force energy. If we do not acknowledge these blockages they can start to cause real damage in our machine and things can start to breakdown. Things like stress & fatigue for example can come into play and then these can lead to illness. Then when our "Vacuum" is not functioning properly we can have trouble bringing in all the things we need. That also then creates holes & leaks that spill out the bad junk for others to possibly vacuum up.
Making sense? You all still with me...? Great!
So now that we understand that everything has this life force energy we can now look more into how Reiki works and how it comes into play.
Reiki is the channelling of this universal life force energy through an attuned practitioner from a higher source to their client; it's like the practitioner being a type of telephone line between the client and the clients' higher self. It acts like a "tune-up" for your "Vacuum" helping to unclog the blockages, to return your system to performing properly.
Reiki does contain spiritual elements to it but it is not a religion, there is no belief system one must have in order to practice or receive it. Reiki will work and benefit you whether you believe in it or not. It can do no harm as it comes from a place of light & love and it complements other forms of healing perfectly.
Please note it is not meant to take the place of traditional medicine it is a great addition to your healing process but always consult your doctor with any medical issues you may have.
The practitioner channels the energy and then transfers it to the client through their hands by different positions over the body, with either light touch or the hands held slightly above. Within our bodies there are also energy portals called Chakras they deal with the flowing and movement of this energy many of the hand positions revolve around these areas. The Chakras have many different roles & functions for our body but I will leave that for future posts to be able to get more into detail.
Reiki treats the complete person - their body, mind, spirit and emotions - it then promotes relaxation,well-being and feelings of peace & security. The overall effect is usually one of deep relaxation. You may feel warmth, tingling or no sensation at all; it can also feel like a glowing energy that flows through and around you. I always tell people they need to experience Reiki for themselves to truly understand how it feels as it varies for each person.
So now if you are ever feeling like your "Vacuum" is clogged or even if you could just use an hour of some deep relaxation , to feel like you just had the best nap you've ever had - 'cause seriously who couldn't? I highly recommend you give Reiki a shot. I promise you won't be disappointed!
If you are in the Calgary area and would like to try a treatment check out our Facebook page or send us an email at vintagesoulwellness@gmail.com. Julie is currently booking sessions. I will be offering treatments very soon as I am currently in the process of home renovations to create a wonderful space and treatment room for my clients. I will keep you updated when that is all complete.
I hope this has given you a better understanding of what Reiki is and if nothing else, maybe now when you meet someone and they bring up Reiki you won't have to give them a look like they have three heads! haha :)
